The Blues finished out there 2011-12 season in the Championship game against Worcester. Playing away, and with only a 5 minute warmup, the Blues put up a good fight but were unable to come away with the title, losing 53-44. Thank you to everyone for their support of us throughout the season. Thanks to all the Blues and Panthers players for their commitment and hard work this season. And thank you to our coaches, Amalio and Blaine, for their wisdom, patience, and coaching talent!
Blues had a glorious 74-73 win against Loughborough 2nd on Wednesday, 7 March 2012. Playing away with only 8 players and no coach, we were able to squeeze out a 1 pt victory in double overtime to move into the Midlands 2A/B Conference Cup Final! The game-winning steal and free-throw are credited to Hilary Costello, #8!
Blues won 58-32 against Northampton University in the Quarter Finals of the Midlands 2A/B Conference Cup and will be playing in the Semifinals against Loughborough 2nd this Wednesday, 7 March 2012!
The Blues fought hard in a challenging match against Oxford 1st on Varsity Day this past Sunday, 4 March, but were unable to prevail against their exceptional team
The Panthers played a great game on Varsity Day against Oxford 2nd and were able to bring home a victory! Congratulations to them, and to our Cambridge Lions (2nds) who also won!
The Blues pulled out a victory in the Alumni Game played on Saturday, March 17. Thanks to all the alumni who were able to come back and challenge this year's team, and for the fun evening afterwards! It was great to see you all and we wish you all the best in your endeavors away from Cambridge!
Blues We have had a strong presence in British and International Basketball in recent years. We compete in the BUSA Midlands 2B Division. Last year, we reached quarterfinals in the Trophy Knockout Tournament playoffs of the BUSA Midlands 1A Division. We also go on international tours, for example in 2010 we toured to Finland to play in a 200-team strong international tournament, placing fourth of 20 in the Women's league. In 2009, we won the ‘European University Basketball Challenge Tournament’ in Milan. We also compete in the traditional Oxford-Cambridge Varsity match, where we in 2011 kept even with Oxford (a premier league team) for 2½ quarters!
The 2011-2012 has seen a lot of success for the Blues team, lead by coach Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco. We opened the season by winning our first three games and are on track to regain promotion to the BUSA Midlands 2B Division. Our goal for the season is to be promoted to the first division and to beat Oxford on their home court! You can check out how we're doing at the BUCScore website.
We train three to four times a week in Michaelmas and Lent Terms,
playing our BUCS games and preparing for our Varsity match which will take place at Oxford this year on March 4. We award 5 Full Blues and 5 Half Blues to
our most valuable players every year. We are working to change this to
10 Full Blues eventually.During the holidays and Easter Term we run
scrimmage sessions.
Panthers The Women’s Basketball Club has been increasingly growing in popularity over the last few years. At the end of Michaelmas Term 2010, we were approached by Oxford and asked to gather players to play their Seconds Team at Varsity. As a result of the great interest and raw talent in the College League, we were able to create a College All Stars Team. The resounding success of the match, with the All Stars winning 40-25 (after only practicing together for five weeks!) convinced us to launch a Seconds Team which we have named the Panthers. The Panthers are being lead by coach Blaine Landis who returns to the Club after his impressive victory against Oxford with the All Stars last year.
In their inaugural season, the Panthers are playing friendlies against local teams. The Panthers played their first game against the RAF women’s basketball team. Although they did not win, the game was a great learning opportunity for the team who fought hard. The game was featured in a press release which you can find in the Forum. We look forward to their future successes!
* Looking for Assistant Coach* We have two university teams and a coach for each, but additional time and experience are always appreciated. An assistant coach may both offer new experience and vary the training for the teams, and can share the trainings and game - coaching with the head coach. So if you have (or would like some) coaching experience and want to be involved, please email us (rs560). Thanks!
Also....Sponsorships We are looking to expand our activities and in order to be able to do so require sponsorship. If you have any ideas/contacts, we would greatly appreciate the help.
