THE TEAM
Head Coach: Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco
Dr. Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco hails from Zaragoza, Spain. As an IEF Marie Curie Fellow, he works as a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Thin Film Magnetism Group in the Physics Department (Cavendish Laboratory) at the University of Cambridge.
A skilled basketball player himself, Amalio first gained coaching experience in 1995 as an Assistant Coach for the Santa Maria del Pilar Marianistas Men’s Under-10 team. The following year he was head coach of the Men’s Under-12 team and was named Best Coach of the Year. Continuing his relationship with the Santa Maria del Pilar Marianistas, over the next 6 years Amalio was the Head or Assistant Coach for several men’s and women’s teams, ranging from Under-13 to Under-21.
In 2003, he was an Under-14 coach at the Basketball Federation of Aragon summer School in Teruel, Spain. From 2003-2005, Amalio joined the CAI Basket Zaragoza Men’s Under-16 team as an Assistant Coach to Carlos Hinojar, during which time the team claimed several Men’s Under-16 championships at various tournaments.
From 2005 to 2009, Amalio worked with the El Olivar Basketball Club in Zaragoza experiencing seasons with the Men’s Under-18, -21, and Senior teams as either an Assistant or Head Coach. In 2007, he qualified for the Spanish Basketball Federation Level I Coaching Award, and then in 2010 he qualified for Level II.
This is Amalio’s second season with the Cambridge University Women’s Blues team as Head Coach.
